Venice has been receiving travelers and tourists for several centuries and so you can to say without any fear of hesitation that the locals are really practiced at looking after visitors. 

The main and of course most impressive thing about Venice is that it is a man-made floating island it is true wonder of the world that is constantly battling drowning, floods and disasters minor and major and every time something extreme happens in Venice, Venice bounces back.

The most popular, famous and it has to be said place to see is the Grand Canal, actually you simply can't miss it, it is main street Venice. The Grand Canal is busy at almost any time of the year. On the water are Gondoliers and Vaporetti built to either take you through Venice at a stately pace or whisk you hither and thither. 

On either side of the Grand Canal are the most exquisite Renaissance mansions and palaces which combined with the brightly coloured Gondolas and the multitude of reflections on the canal make the Grand Canal a dancing vibrant ocean of colour. 

From the Grand Canal you can reach all of the must see attractions St Mark's Square or as the Venetians call it Piazza San Marco which is lined with wonderful buildings and flooded with Pigeons and although it is crowded during the day at night the cafe lights come one and the waiters dust off pure white table cloths allowing you to either have wonderful Italian food or sip coffee in the peaceful, beautiful surroundings.

When you are standing in St Marks Square you are no more than a stone's throw from all of the main attractions and places to visit that you will have heard so much about. The Rialto Bridge, Castello, Santa Croce and so much more and it is just great to wander off and be amazed as you turn every corner. 

Venice is a maze of alleyways and paths that take you further into the heart of the city and it is almost guaranteed that you will get totally lost, and that is simply part of the attraction, you won't of course be lost for long because Venice is a small city and almost every street, path or alleyway leads you to either the Grand Canal or St Mark's Square.

It is hard to miss any landmark or sight in Venice but do ensure that you see Saint Mark's Basilica, it is staggering, The Lido which is an island just off shore and usually very peaceful. 

And there is so much more the San Rocco if you love the paintings of Tintoretto, Santa Maria dei Frari or St. Mary of the Friars houses, the Ca Rezzonico, the Rialto Market and more and more, there is so much more to this wonderful gem in the Adriatic.
