When you visit Bangkok you will be astonished by the blends of old and new, western and eastern culture, food, partying and nightlife, architecture, history, shopping, this is one of the reasons why you will never ever succeed in seeing and doing everything that Bangkok has to offer.

With that fact in mind it is best to just concentrate on doing five or six things if you are tight for time while you are in Bangkok, if you have longer then of course you can do more. 

One of the best ways to discover Thailand and Thai culture is to visit the Muang Boran it is an enormous open air museum that covers over 350 acres and is actually laid out to mirror Thailand itself and so walking around Muang Boran enables you to see temples, castles, houses and also entire cities in miniature while at the same time soaking up an enormous amount of information about Thailand and the Thai people. 

Armed with the information from Muang Boran and possible a little from The Grand Palace, a beautiful Royal Palace that is still lived in by the Royal family today, you will have a great understanding of the Thai people.

Other places that have to be on the list when you are in Thailand are the temples Wat Pho is the largest and oldest Buddhist temple in Bangkok, and has a statue of Buddha lying down which is a rare pose for this prophet. The statute of Buddha is large just over 150 feet long and is covered in gold leaf. 

Wat Sutat is also an interesting temple which was built to thank the gods for a good Rice harvest. 

One of the most impressive places to visit are the Klongs where families of Thai people live their lives aboard boats called Sampans and use the river for almost everything, fishing, washing, drinking laundry and unfortunately as toilets. The people who live in the Klongs are very poor but their boats are brightly coloured and decorated with garlands of fresh flowers which make them a riot of colour in the wonderful Thai sunshine.

If you like Elephants then you are in for a real treat at the Thai National Elephant Museum. In Thailand the Elephant is revered and loved and the museum will tell you all about the unusual things that elephants do in addition to heavy labour, such as finding victims beneath debris, in the recent Tsunami they were especially useful.
